Troubleshooting The MPEG-4 AAC audio bitstreams above are presented as HTML5 audio objects - which should play back correctly in: • Microsoft Internet Explorer 9+ (Win 7+ PC) • Apple Safari 5+ (Win 7+ PC) • Google Chrome (Win 7+ PC, Mac OS, Android) when your computer has 5.1 channel speakers connected or connects via HDMI to a 5.1 or better surround sound AVR or home theater system. Note that many browsers and media players (particularly on mobile devices such as the iPhone) will output a stereo downmix from these streams, even if they don't support multichannel output. The bitstream files, if downloaded locally, should also play correctly in: • Microsoft Windows Media Player 12 (Win 7+ PC) • Apple QuickTime (Win 7+ PC or Mac) • VLC Player (Win 7+ PC) No sound or no rear channels? Check the page. 7.1 Channel Support The AAC codec family has supported up to 48 channels of audio since its initial development through predefined channel configurations and a flexible escape mechanism.

Rodrigo Mendes 28/4/2017, 8:45 น. I'd like to chime in on this, because I'm amazed myself right now! I am aware of the 'Dolby Pro Logic' trap many people fall into, and it's easy to spot it (left/right surround speakers can't be addressed separately for instance). And I was equally disappointed, trying Toni's test video on my PS4 connected to a Marantz AVR with 5 satellites and one sub, just to hear the sounds only from the front speakers. BUT then I tried Arun's test video 'Surround Sound Test LPCM 5.1 - Demo' - and it works! (again on the PS4) Each explicit sound was playing on the assigned speaker exclusively - even the LFE sound - no bleeding into any other speakers. Can't achieve that with old ProLogic.

Sorry, it doesn't really interest me to figure out how to get a browser to tell YouTube you're able to receive 5.1. But I am interested in proving that YouTube will play 5.1 which is why I added to the discussion. So, in addition to my other postings, I created a 4K video of me diving on a ship wreck and added a DD 5.1 audio track and posted it to YouTube (Link below).

One thing to understand is 'transcoding'. The protocol between a media server and receiver permits the server to interrogate the capabilities of the receiver and transcode the video/audio to something the receiver can play. So if you don't have a 4K TV and play one of the 4K YouTube videos, it will be transcoded to 1080P. If you play it on some phones it will be transcoded to 720P. If you upload a wmv file it might get transcoded to mp4 so the receiver can play it.

I guess i'm not really sure what help people would benefit from the most. If you want to play 5.1, at least here in the US, you'll spend more of your valuable time, which you can never get back, trying to get some alternative something to work than to just buy a Roku. At my billing rate, if i spend more than 15 minutes on something, i'm wasting my time and should have bought a Roku it would have been cheaper. Time is money. If instead, you're into the challenge, i wish you the best of luck. How can i help.

I described, how I actually did it. I watched the video file and I listened to the audio file in two different windows at the same time! Actually you do not have to 'watch' the window playing the sound, so you can open the video window over the full screen.

And bitsream (DTS) does it. Sidenote my harman kardon detects what kind of audio format is coming in, when i put it on linear PCM it would say stereo and i couldn't get it to true 5.1. But with dolby or DTS ( when on DTS it automatically be DTS or lower) i cant change the settings of my reciever. If i play a video that says 5.1 test and it doesnt work, the videoaudio isnt true 5.1 ( dolby or DTS). I hope this is all readable and understandable. Polanut 3/7/2017, 7:30 น.

I'm more interested in the kbps of so-called 5.1 videos as opposed to stereo. Says that recommended bitrates for stereo and 5.1 are 384 kbps and 512 kbps, respectively. Now does this mean that even if YouTube doesn't actually support 5.1., as people claim in this thread, that it will encode 5.1 in a higher bitrate than stereo videos? And are these recommended bitrates the actual bitrates that YouTube encodes its videos, or just the bitrates it recommends for uploading? Question Man 31/3/2017, 9:52 น. This doesn't exactly add to the discussion but I upload gaming videos frequently I always make sure to include the original 7.1 FLAC in my upload as a simple way of future proofing my videos.

It was not my intention to heart you and I apologize for that. And you really do not have to punish me for that, by using your dialect to make the things even harder for us, who fight with English as a foreign language. I asked you several times to give us the source of your 'inside' information, instead of only the low hanging fruits (like the right click in YouTube), but I never understood, that you really did it. If you seriously want to claim the 'authorship', please give us reference to your message(s) - with the dates, where you brought this link up first time and told us, that you could play the genuine audio in 5.1 right away by clicking at the ' URL' link. As long as I remember, you were notoriously telling us, that YouTube never let us hear anything else but STEREO, even if the uploaded files are 5.1. Well, back to the real thing.

Rodrigo Mendes, 4:04 น. Black Friday has just ended, it's 1:40 a.m. And I just finished reading this entire post. Thanks to everyone for contributing. This has been an annoyance for me for years. (5.1 & YT) Glad I'm not the only one who is bothered by this.

For several months the film was surreptitiously inserted into the cinema programme, playing, unannounced, before all main features. The film is a playful riff on more functional speaker tests used by cinema projectionists to check that the sound system is operating correctly. Typical tests check the volume, frequency range and position of each speaker plus any synchronisation or phasing issues between them. Under the guise of a sound test the work explores the mechanics of the 5.1 surround sound system, temporarily breaking the spell of the surround-sound illusion to draw the audience's attention to the location of the speakers within the cinema environment. The motion graphics were designed to mirror the way the audio moves through the space in three dimensions. The film was commissioned by Pixel Palace for Tyneside Cinema.

Audio from those sources is definitely 5.1 as shown by the Onkyo receiver. I have never been able to get any video from YouTube or YouTube music to play anything but PCM 2.0 as shown by the Onkyo receiver. I play 4K video all the time from YouTube and I have never been able to receive better audio then PCM 2.0 according to the Onkyo receiver. Hey guys, I had the same problem, when i was setting my 5.1 cinema, testing it with YT videos, and was disappointed of 2.0 sound, but later i found out it is not only the receiver, where to set Dolby Digital, but as well in my TV I had to set from PCM to Dolby, it did not work anyway. In the web found the same 5.1 track for test and that worked, so my cinema was set properly. It was about year ago, and now reading this topic I tried to play it from YT-app (Samsung TV) and it works.

I had one cheap audio quest cable and immediately noticed a difference in picture quality. Okay, well, the new cables improved things all around. YouTube still only does 2.1. Seems to be a limitation.

All this is configurable at the media server. So those who are only getting 2.0 audio are getting transcoded because YouTube has determined their equipment can only play 2.0. Now maybe you can play 5.1 on your receiver, but it isn't telling YouTube that. The YouTube app on my LG will not play 5.1 no matter what. Even when i play a 5.1 video from my own media plex server to the LG, the plex will downmix it. But when i play the same video from my plex server on the Roku, it plays 5.1. So there you go.

Asking their uploaders to provide for a site (like Google Drive) where we could download them, is insane and actually is against the idea and spirit of YouTube. So our 'struggle' is more than fair. Have patience and help yourself by helping each other with any useful information. Try to publish only correct info (or at least verified by testing) and be very careful, when opposing to other people. We all mean well, don¨t we.

I was 'hoping', that the explanation to our bad luck with 5.1 on YouTube was. That PS4 made a deal with YouTube, that they will be exclusive receiver of YouTube 5.1 sound, or that only their app could negotiate with the YouTube software, so it will send the 5.1 stream to them. YouTube is obviously sending the 5.1 stream to my Chrome, but I still cannot make use of it! Yes, I also tried with the Windows Kodi YouTube add-on with the result of AAC 2.0 comming out. So what's wrong? Is it now time for the misterious tweeks with Chrome/Firefox according to the rumourous addvices on internet?

My setup is a 50' Panasonic plasma TV, Sony 7.2 receiver, Sony PS3, Roku3, TiVo Bolt and a Second gen Chromecast. I've stayed with the PS3 because as a media server, it's superior to the PS4. But I must say.

Tony Darker 7/7/2017, 19:08 น. Please, do not feel offended by not mentioning you as source of the 'link'.

Dream Theater in 5.1 over YouTube??? Dream Theater covers in 5.1 over YouTube??? My duel sub-wolfers will finally earn their keep! (Pun intended) Now remind me again why I hate the PS4? Derek, 11:52 น. The answer is still NO, why is this thread still going? YT encodes everything, that's what happens when it says processing.

As we saw with the introduction of 60FPS playback, videos that were previously uploaded before this feature was introduced were actually re-encoded again to support the new standard. I would predict for this to happen again with the introduction of surround playback, although I may be wrong.

Youtube 5.1 Audio Test

That screenshot was as much proof as I could currently show, I have looked at many audio streams contained within YouTube videos and the highest bitrates have been 160kbps stereo. I could not download the stream to a file and show it physically but playing around with speaker volumes I can tell you that audio stream is multichannel. It doesn't stream on PC in chrome as far as I'm aware, I had to stream it manually with SVP software. I presume that stream is only available to those watching on PS4. I apologise if my previous post was unclear. (ไม่รู้จัก) 20/6/2017, 17:09 น.

The other apps seem to be working as they should. I'm satisfied with the results and can accept the limitations. As a side note, the surround sound test app referenced in Jeff's article worked really good.

If a subwoofer is used with limited-range main speakers, all 60 Hz tones should play at the same level through the subwoofer. (Hold SLM next to subwoofer) If full-range speakers are used, the 60 Hz tones should play through each speaker individually, though levels may vary due to standing wave or resonances in the listening rrom. The LFE signal is encoded 10 dB lower to account for the 10 dB gain in the LFE channel in the playback amplifer's bass management circuits. If the decoder supports SBR, all four tones, 6, 8, 10, and 12 KHz should be heard (or seen on a sound level meter if you have high-frequency hearing loss).

By the way, I am also fully aware, that the 5.1 audio file with 258 audio codec does not need to be the originally uploaded format, but that does not disturb me so much. I just noticed, that there is a lot of valuable material and test files in 5.1 on YouTube, that I can not listen to. And it remains to next investigations (that I hope you will be part of), why only some 5.1 clips on YouTube (actually only a minority) have the 258 codec. But I hope, that with the workaround making it possible to play the audio 5.1, the uploaders will find out, which uploaded audio format results in creating the 258 audio codec at YouTube, so they do not waste their time uploading material for nothing (read STEREO).
