Back in 2005, Andrzej Bartkowiak directed the first film based on the Doom games. After the film rights got bounced around between Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros., and back to Universal, the film was finally saw the light of day, only to emerge as a box office bomb. Despite starring Dwayne Johnson, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike, 2005’s Doom film was critically panned and currently holds a 19 percent freshness rating on. Now, though, it seems Universal Pictures is taking another shot at the Doom series.

Interestingly enough, (The Rock), who starred in the 2005 film adaptation of DOOM, took to twitter 10 days ago and talked about the Rotten Tomatoes score for his most recent film, Rampage. In, he also mentioned that he starred in “that sinker DOOM”, to which the official DOOM Twitter account replied simply “Dwyane”. Since his tweet and the news of a new DOOM movie is so close together, I can’t help but wonder if The Rock will return and give DOOM another shot. Variety talked to an NBC/Universal spokesperson, who that the new DOOM movie is in the works and that it is being handled by Universal 1440 Entertainment. According to Variety, the studio produces animated non-theatrical and live-action productions for direct distribution to all media worldwide.

Despite the fact that Doom is a recognizable and highly-praised game series with many miles behind it, movie fans may not be so quick to give the franchise a chance in cinemas due to the 2005 original. Universal will have to make sure the world’s eventual first look at the second attempt is highly polished, or it could be a non-starter for a franchise otherwise chock full of value.

Giglio says his Marines have a “heads up” display on their visors, which will allow the movie to shift into the first-person perspective on a whim, and in a very video game move, show viewers the character’s location on a map and other valuable info. “We went for subtle homage instead of hit over the head,” he says. While “subtle homage” may be a foreign notion to the Doom franchise, Giglio will add a new layer to Doomguy’s history next year. The choice to put the player in the action hero’s shoes for such an extended amount of time was daring in 2005, but movies have come a long way.

“While Doom is widely known for pioneering the first-person perspective, it’s not ‘new’ anymore. So I wanted to find a way to give a nod to it, but not have it dominate or distract or take you out of the film.

I don't know about you but I played the hell out of when I was a kid. Yes, I saw the 2005 movie adaptation starring The Rock and Karl Urban just like the rest of you and yes I found it to be just as terrible as you did. It is with all of this in mind that I'm excited to bring you the news that UIniversal seems to be getting ready to bring us an all-new DOOM flick! Word about the film dropped on Twitter recently with Nina Bergman tweeting: Wow, I’m doing the next “Doom” movie w Universal Pictures! I just signed all the paperwork. I get to go back to Bulgaria again and work with some of my favorite people.

A pre-superfame Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Karl Urban were cast to play the two male leads, “Sarge” Mahonin and “Reaper” Gimm, Marines sent to face off with brutal foes in cramped Martian hallways. The movie follows the game’s plot pretty clearly, with hapless scientists accidentally unleashing a horde of grotesque monsters — in this case mutated humans, not actual demons from Hell — in their search for cheap energy. The majority of Doom plays out as a standard mid-2000s action flick, with lots of CGI that’s not quite up to snuff and wisecracks that don’t land despite Johnson’s easy charisma.

The limited edition boxes include the following, with The Beast Box retailing at $166 USD and the Standard Edition at $40 USD.

The sequence doesn’t feel quite like a movie or a video game — the best thing I can compare it to is one of those amusement park rides with big screens and moving chairs. First-person shots in action movies weren’t uncharted territory before Doom. One notable attempt was Robert Montgomery’s 1947 adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Lady in the Lake. The film had a tough row to hoe in theaters; the year prior, Humphrey Bogart had played Chandler’s famous detective Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep, which was an immense commercial hit. Montgomery was also starring in Lady, and knew he needed to do something different. At the beginning of the film, Montgomery turns to the audience and tells them that the entire movie will be seen through Marlowe’s eyes as he attempts to solve the crime.

The original Doom movie cost about $60,000,000 to make, but clawed back only $55,000,000 at the box office. Wow I’m doing the next “Doom” movie w Universal Pictures! I just signed all the paperwork??I get to go back to Bulgaria again and work with some of my favorite people? This movie w a super cool Director AND my new record coming out, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world? — Nina Bergman (@ninabergman) Bethesda Studios has had plenty of success with the rebirth of the Doom intellectual property, with the reboot.

Apparently there are that Universal (which still owns the rights to Doom) is in the “early stages of development” on a reboot not even six years after the release of the first film. Universal is said to be very interested in rebooting the franchise after the recent success of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, which earned $300 million on a $175 budget. The first Doom film was shot on a $66 million budget and has yet to break even by only grossing $56 million to date. The idea is that with a bigger budget and the use of 3D, a Doom remake could actually turn a profit. Another scary thought is the idea that with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra being used as an example, Universal will want to make a PG-13 version of the film in order to help bring in even more ticket sales.

An NBC/Universal spokesperson speaking to revealed that the movie will be handled by Universal 1440 Entertainment, a branch that specializes in non-theatrical productions (setting up the movie to possibly appear first on digital platforms like Netflix, or to have a direct-to-DVD release). Actress and singer Nina Bergman also tweeted about her involvement with the film, confirming that she’d “signed all the paperwork” and is ready to get started. In a followup tweet, she added that the script is completed.

Let’s hope if the reboot does happen, that Universal kills that idea quick.

In a new comment on his Twitter account, director Giglio has also confirmed that despite wanting to include the famous Spiderdemon monster, it sadly had to be cut.

Doom 2019 Movie

There is a possibility that the new “DOOM” movie of a new addition to the franchise, according to Den of Geek US. Bethesda has yet to make such an announcement, however. That being said, anything can happen especially with the 2018 Electronic Entertainment Expo on the horizon. Wow I’m doing the next “Doom” movie w Universal Pictures! The 2005 Doom movie was also a financial dud for Universal, so they while they may recognize they have a potentially valuable brand name with the series, they might be trying to reduce the risk this time around. New Doom Movie Female Lead

Related: It came as a surprise when news of a new Doom movie emerged online, with actress/singer Nina Bergman revealing she'd signed on for the new movie. Now has shed some more light on the project, with an NBC/Universal spokesperson revealing the movie is being handled by Universal 1440 Entertainment.

In that light, there's very little risk for Universal. However good the new Doom may be, it won't live or die based on a short theatrical run. It can get wide distribution (and potentially significant viewership) for relatively little effort.

I have to admit that I kind of liked the mindless action, but if I had to review it I would also give it quite a low score overall. However, that isn’t stopping Universal Pictures from creating a new DOOM movie. At the time of writing, we have no clue about the plot or who else stars in it (will Dwayne Johnson return?), but the news did break about the new DOOM movie via a tweet by actress and singer, who said that: “ Wow, I’m doing the next ‘Doom’ movie with Universal Pictures! I just signed all the paperwork. I get to go back to Bulgaria again and work with some of my favorite people. This movie with a super cool director AND my new record coming out, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.” – DOOM is one of my favourite FPS franchises of all time and the reboot of the game franchise back in 2016 did the series justice. Let’s hope the next movie does the same thing.
